Learn about non profit and the community

In a Community, the existence of productive Non Profit Agencies can have a major impact to the overall well-being of the area. These Non Profit Agencies can initiate and complete many projects that address the needs of the Community, from educational tutors in the schools to making roadways more attractive by keeping them free from litter. A Community could have multiple Non Profit Agencies that work together to improve the society of the entire Community.

There are actually many different kinds of organizations that are classified as Non Profit Agencies. Charities make up the bulk of these groups and there are over a million in the United States. The charities help a Community by making projects that help by improving conditions in the geographical area. Poverty is often a major concern of a non profit charity and it may do specific programs to help impoverished people within a certain area. This could include collecting donations and then administering the money to those that need it in the Community. In addition, the non profit charity could organize a food drive to make sure that people in poverty are able to get essential amounts of food without expense. A common Community project that is completed by charities is to use donations to buy gifts at Christmas for those families who cannot afford the extra costs of gifts.

In addition to the charities, another non profit organization that can help a Community are known as Community foundations. Whereas a local charity may be a branch of a national or international network, a Community foundation only exists to address the needs of one specific Community. There are more than 700 in the U.S. in many different areas and they can be as small as a single neighborhood or work to better the Community of even a large city. They work by pooling donations and fund raising efforts to complete projects. The projects are often decided by the members of the Community instead of the members of the foundation. This can be more advantageous for the Community than the work of charities, simply because they decide the priority of the projects. They also donate funds in the form of grants to support projects being done by other organizations.

In the United States, most of the funding for Community foundations or charities comes from the people that live in the area or local corporations. In this way, a person or company in a Community that donates money can see a direct result of their cooperation as the projects being done will directly affect the surrounding area. In addition, nearly all of the donations to a charity or Community foundation are considered to be tax deductible and can actually have a positive advantage for the donor.
